Hey, I’m Katie, and welcome to Katie Derus Photography! You may already know me, but if not here’s a little bit about who I am, what I do, and why I’m in love with being a photographer.
I currently live in the beautiful city of Milwaukee, WI. I recently moved back here after living the last 7 years in sunny, mountainous Colorado, which I loved, but it was time to come back to the place I was born and raised. So I’m back in the land of beer and cheese and enjoying all my favorite Wisconsin things, like the Green Bay Packers, the north woods, the lakes in summer, and spending lots of time with my friends and family!
I have a degree in photojournalism, and it’s my first photography love, but I’ve discovered that the incredibly exciting world of lifestyle photography is exactly what I want to be doing. I love the adventure that comes with meeting new people and capturing their lives the way they want to remember them!
My goal is to make every session a blast for each person in front of my camera. I remember my own family photos from when I was younger, when my mother would force us all into khakis and navy blue polo shirts so we were already all annoyed with the process, and then we would head to a studio for an over-posed family photo that, to this day, I cringe when I see hanging in our house. I never want a family to have that feeling at any point of a shoot with me – before, during or after!
I love to take real moments, even seemingly mundane moments, and freeze them in time for you to hold onto forever. Whether it’s that look the love of your life gives you when they think you’re not looking, or the happy tears your parents cry as you marry each other in your dream wedding. Or maybe it’s the sweet snuggles of your newborn baby as you try to get them to sleep, or the full-blown laughter of your 3-year-old as you chase them through the park. Those are the moments I try to find in each and every shoot.
My philosophy is that photography should be fun. If you’re genuinely having fun in front of my camera, it will come through in your photos – photos that you will hopefully love for years to come!
So please take a look around and feel free to shoot me an email if you’d like to know more or set up a shoot!
